Gold Bullion Doesn’t Earn Interest Or Income
Unlike bonds and certificates of deposit, gold bullion does not earn interest. Unlike stock, it does not earn dividends. This makes this investment differ in that the money to be made results solely from the increase in value. Any risk of holding gold in the portfolio is very small and extremely unlikely to come to fruition because it is related to a decline in value.
The value of gold has skyrocketed during the past few years, subject to only some minor, and short-lived, dips in price. In fact, viewing gold prices from the historical perspective, it becomes clear that gold has always increased in value. This precious metal is rare and its price is determined by supply and demand, not dictated by artificial manipulation.
Anyone who invests in gold to make a profit needs to understand that this money will not be realized until the gold is sold. This means that timing is everything in terms of buying and selling gold. It also means that gold may serve a more valuable purpose as a safe haven during unstable economic times, when currency prices seem to go into a freefall.
The Bank of England used the argument that gold does not pay interest or dividends to justify the sale of half of England’s gold holdings when the market was at a low in 1998. It sold the gold and purchased U.S. Treasury bills. After the sale, the gold price tripled and the value of the dollar fell 30 percent against the British pound.
Though gold does not earn dividends or interest, it also is not at risk. The capital appreciation of gold is many times higher than current interest rates. Gold is not subject to the risks of other interest-bearing investments. Sometimes, the smartest investment is not the one that results in immediate income.
